If you've searched for cable railing prices in Canada and come back empty-handed (or with vague "it depends" answers) you're not alone. Most sources either talk about American pricing, avoid committing to real numbers, or bundle everything into a contractor quote that tells you nothing about what you're actually paying for.
We're going to do the opposite. This guide breaks down the real cost of a cable railing project in Canada, based on our actual product prices, so you can plan your budget with confidence before you spend a cent.
Two Ways to Buy, Two Very Different Price Profiles
Before getting into numbers, it's worth understanding that at GauthierDeLaPlante, you can approach your cable railing project in two ways. The total cost varies significantly depending on which path you take.
Option 1 — Direct purchase (hardware only) You already have posts (wood, steel, or aluminum) or you're sourcing them separately. You buy our tensioner kits and cable, and you install everything yourself. This is the lowest-cost option and the choice for the vast majority of our DIY customers.
Option 2 — Custom quote (complete system) You need everything: custom aluminum posts, handrail, cable, and tensioners, all designed and manufactured to your exact measurements. This is our full-service option, ideal for contractors and homeowners who want a turnkey solution.
We'll cover both in detail below.

Option 1: Hardware Only — What Does It Cost?
Tensioner Kits
The tensioner kit (also called a fitting kit or turnbuckle kit) is the core of your cable railing system. It's what threads through your posts and keeps each cable run taut. The price varies by kit family:
|
Kit family |
Price per kit (CAD) |
Installation method |
Best for |
|
Marina |
Wood: from $11.97 Metal : from $15.96 |
Crimping tool required |
Clean, minimal look |
|
Nautica |
Wood: from $21.59 Metal : from $25.69 |
Crimping tool required |
Long runs, large posts |
|
Classic |
Wood: from $23.79 Metal : from $27.19 |
No special tool needed |
Traditional look |
|
Swageless |
Metal : from $23.69 |
Hex key only |
Fast DIY installs |
Prices shown are per kit, in CAD, for Kit I (straight sections). Prices for Kit II (stair sections) and black finish versions are slightly higher. Prices current as of March 2026.
Each kit tensions one cable run across one section of railing. To calculate how many kits you need, multiply the number of cable runs per section by the number of sections. More on that below.
Stainless Steel Cable
Cable is sold by the foot and priced separately from the kits:
- Stainless steel cable (natural finish): $0.71/ft
- Stainless steel cable (matte black): $1.09/ft
Both are marine-grade 316 stainless steel, the same grade used in saltwater boat rigging. They're rated for years of Canadian winters, coastal environments, and freeze-thaw cycles without corrosion.
Tools
If you choose a Marina or Nautica kit, you'll need a crimping tool (hand swager) to install the cable sleeves. You can buy ours directly:
- Hand swager (buy): $124.99
- Heavy-duty cable cutter: $99.99
- Standard cable cutter: $32.49
If you choose a Classic or Swageless kit, no special tools are required — just a hex key and a wrench you already own.
Real Example: What Does a Typical Deck Cost in Hardware?
Let's price out a concrete project to make this tangible.
Project: A rectangular deck with 3 straight sections totalling 45 linear feet. Railing height: 36 inches. Wood posts already in place. Kit chosen: Marina (stainless steel).
Step 1 — Number of cable runs. A 36-inch railing requires a minimum of 8 horizontal cable runs per section to comply with building codes (the 4-inch sphere rule). With 3 sections: 3 × 8 = 24 kits total.
Step 2 — Kit cost. Marina Kit I, Metal Post: $15.96 × 24 = $383.04
Step 3 — Cable 45 linear feet × 8 runs = 360 feet. Add 10% buffer = 396 feet ordered. $0.71/ft × 396 = $300.96
Step 4 — Tools (if buying) Hand swager: $124.99 (If you already own a drill and basic hand tools, this is your only tool cost.)
Total hardware cost for this project: ~$800 CAD (Not including posts, which you already have, and not including tax and shipping.)
That's a 45-foot deck railing with premium marine-grade hardware for approximately $800 in materials. Compare that to what a comparable vinyl or aluminum baluster railing would cost at a big box retailer, and the value becomes clear.
If you use the Swageless or Classic kit instead of Marina, you save on tools entirely. And if your sections are shorter or you have fewer runs, the total drops accordingly.
Option 2: Complete Custom System — What to Expect
If you need custom aluminum posts and handrail in addition to the cable and tensioners, pricing is done through a quote (every project is different).
Here's what goes into a complete system quote:
Custom aluminum posts (from $189.99) are manufactured in our own facility in Quebec City. Pricing depends on the post type (surface mount, fascia mount, stair post, corner post), profile (1½" × 1½" or 2" × 2"), height (35" or 41"), and quantity. Standard posts in matte black are available from stock for faster delivery.
Aluminum handrail (from $20.99 per ft.) is fabricated to your exact length. It connects to posts using a concealed bracket system for a seamless finish.
Color: Standard matte black is included. For a custom powder coat color from our 10-color chart, a flat additional fee applies.
Lead time: Custom posts and handrail take approximately 2 to 4 weeks to fabricate, depending on the time of year.

How Does Cable Railing Compare to Other Railing Types?
Before committing to cable railing, it's worth a quick comparison:
|
Railing type |
Hardware cost |
Maintenance |
Lifespan |

Cable railing |
$ to $$ |
Very low |
30+ years |
Excellent |
|
Glass railing |
$$$ to $$$$ |
Moderate (cleaning) |

Aluminum baluster |

Wood baluster |
$ |
High |
10-15 years |

|
Vinyl baluster |
$ |
Low |

Cable railing hits a rare sweet spot: it's among the most affordable options upfront, nearly maintenance-free, and delivers a view quality that only glass can match at a fraction of the glass railing price.
What Makes the Price Go Up or Down?
A few variables will shift your total cost:
Section length: Longer sections need more cable but the same number of kits (one per run per section). Longer sections also need intermediate posts (one every 4 to 6 ft) to hold the handrail and maintain proper cable tension, which adds a post but keeps the hardware cost the same.
Stair sections: Stair sections require Kit II instead of Kit I. Kit II are slightly more expensive and are designed for angled runs (make sure you count your stair sections separately when ordering).
Finish: Matte black cable and fittings are slightly more expensive than natural stainless steel. The look is worth it for many projects, but it's a personal call.
Province: Shipping to Western Canada takes slightly longer (about 5 business days) and shipping costs vary by distance. In-stock hardware ships within 24 to 48 hours in Eastern Canada.

FAQ
How much does cable railing cost per linear foot?
There is no single fixed price per linear foot, as too many variables can affect the total cost. For example, longer sections generally reduce the cost per linear foot since the cost of tensioner kits is spread over a greater distance. For hardware-only projects with posts already in place, the cost varies depending on the kit type, number of cable runs, and section lengths. More sections, stairs, or premium finishes will increase the total cost.
How many cable runs do you need for a railing?
Most 36-inch railings require around 8 horizontal cable runs to meet code. For 42-inch railings, 9 to 10 runs are typically needed depending on the layout and local building requirements.
What factors affect the cost of a cable railing system?
The main factors include total length, number of sections, presence of stairs, kit type, finish (stainless steel or black), and whether you are buying hardware only or a complete system with posts and handrail.
